St. Gabriel Catholic confers honors on two members

The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville has honored two of its members with special awards.

Matt Tarnowski, selected Teen of the Year by the parish group, and Cathy Zitelli, chosen Woman of the Year by the Women's Guild, were both honored at a recognition mass Feb. 4 at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta.

Tarnowski, a senior at Fayette County High, is the son of Lisa and Stan Tarnowski of Fayetteville. At FCHS, he is president of both the select chorus and the student congress and was selected Scholar of the Month in August of 2000. An honor graduate, his peers selected him "Most Likely to Succeed."

"As a key member of the youth group at the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel, Matt is a reader of the scriptures at the celebration of the Mass, as well as a eucharistic minister," a spokesperson said. "He is an active member of the Columbian Squires, the teen branch of the Knights of Columbus."

Tarnowski plans to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy following his graduation this spring.

Zitelli is the director of the parish preschool and also teaches third grade. She is past president of the Women's Guild and is currently treasurer of the group's south deanery chapter. She is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and is a leader in the Renew 2000 core group, a spiritual study group in the parish.

"Cathy is a valuable treasure of the guild and our parish," said Women's Guild president Theresa Caldwell. "She has so many hidden talents and graciously volunteers to help, whatever the task. It's like looking through a treasure chest each job she takes on brings another talent."

Zitelli and her husband, Ted, have been members of St. Gabriel for seven years, and are originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., where they were married 17 years ago. They have three children, David, Laura and Mary.
