The regular season of high school basketball ended over the weekend and the region tournaments began earlier this week. For many of our local high schools, the season could have ended better.

McIntosh's boys and girls teams lost their final games on Friday when they faced Lovejoy. The boys lost 68-62. They fell behind 6-0 at the beginning of the game and could not overcome the deficit.

The Chiefs were down 16-13 after the first quarter and 35-30 at the half. In the fourth quarter the Chiefs cut the lead to two points but couldn't secure a win.

Josh Burr led the Chiefs in scoring with 20 points, while Scott Prah and Neil Hubble added nine apiece. The Chiefs finished 15-10 overall and 7-8 in the region.

McIntosh faced East Coweta Monday night in the first round of the playoffs and won 58-44.

The Chiefs took an early lead and lengthened it in each quarter. Burr led the team in scoring with 24 points, while Jared McWilliams added seven. McIntosh will face Riverdale tonight at Fayette County High School at 8:30 p.m. The Chiefs lost to Riverdale 66-59 in their only meeting this season.

The Lady Chiefs had a tough time as well, losing to Lovejoy 43-30. The team was down only 7-6 after the first quarter but they were outscored 16-6 in the second quarter and held to only two points in the third quarter.

Lyndsey Murphy led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Whitney Wallis added six. The Lady Chiefs faced Lovejoy again on Monday in the first round of the playoffs but results were not in at the time the paper went to press.

Starr's Mill had a big weekend. The Panthers played East Coweta Friday night and Stockbridge Saturday night.

The boys lost both games, 50-47 to East Coweta and then getting 64-51 to Stockbridge. The Panthers were down 30-18 at the half in their game against the Indians and cut the lead to one point twice in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the deficit. Bret Zondervan led the team in scoring with 12 points, while Donny Lampen added 11 points.

On Saturday night, the Panthers were down 28-27 at the half against Stockbridge but they were outscored 21-11 in the third quarter and couldn't come back. Lampen and Zondervan each had 18 points in the loss. The Panthers lost 10 of their last 11 games and finished 4-15 in the region and 8-15 overall. Starr's Mill faced Stockbridge on Monday night in the first round of the region tournament and lost 75-65.

The Panthers fell behind early and made several attempts to comeback, cutting the Stockbridge lead to five points on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough and the Tigers advanced to the second round of the region tournament.

The Lady Panthers lost to East Coweta 54-52 but defeated the Stockbridge Lady Tigers 64-35. The Lady Panthers led the Lady Indians by five points with three minutes remaining, but the score was tied with six seconds left in the game.

Erin Ricker led Starr's Mill in scoring with 16 points. The Lady Panthers faced Fayette County on Monday night in the first round of the region tournament, but results were not available when the paper went to press.

Fayette County's girls lost a heartbreaker to Jonesboro in overtime Friday night, 51-49.

The Fayette County boys team lost to Jonesboro 63-57 and met Riverdale in the first round of the region tournament. Riverdale beat the Tigers 90-65. The first round games were held at Henry county High School or Stockbridge High School, while the second round games will be played at Fayette County High School tonight.

Sandy Creek High School's boys basketball team defeated Jones County at home on Friday night by a score of 58-55. The Patriots, 11-5 in region play, will face Woodward Academy at Union Grove High School Thursday at 4 p.m. The Lady Patriots, 5-11 in region play, faced Woodward Academy yesterday afternoon.
