Panthers win county swim meet and head to state meet this weekend

The Starr's Mill High School swim team defeated the three other county high schools to win the Fayette County Swim Championships. Feb. 2 at the Southeast Natatorium in Atlanta.

This is the first county championship for Starr's Mill. It was a very closely contested meet, with the toughest competition coming from McIntosh.

The boys team won with a score of 190 to McIntosh's 146,while the girls placed first with 163 points to McIntosh's 158. Fayette County placed third overall, while Sandy Creek placed fourth.

The competition was fierce, as many swimmers had previously qualified for the up and coming state meet which will be held at Westminster Feb. 16-17.

First-place swimmers for Starr's Mill in individual events were Kenny Jubb (50 Free, 100 Free), Kyle Flora (200 IM, 100 Back) and Brett Stevens (100 Fly, 2nd 50 Free).

Second-place finishers in individuals were Brittany Stevens (200 IM, 100 Fly), Laurel Surratt (100 Free, 100 Breast), Kim Wetter (200 Free), Josh Strickland (200 Free, 100 Free), Haynes Finney (100 Back), and Will Hardison(100 Breast).

Third-place swimmers were Samantha Hudson (50 Free), Krista Ulrich (100 Back), and Jason Buttram (500 Free).

There were also new qualifiers from Starr's Mill for the state championships. The girls 200 Medley Relay team consisting of Krista Ulrich, Laurel Surratt, Brittany Stevens and Samantha Hudson qualified, as well as the boys 400 Free Relay team with Kenny Jubb, Josh Strickland, Brett Stevens and Kyle Flora. Jubb added to his events by also qualifying in the 50 Free.

To get to Westminster High School, take I-85 North to I-75 North towards Marietta/Chattanooga. Take the US-41/Northside Parkway exit towards West Paces Ferry Rd. Turn left on to Northside Parkway and then turn left on to West Paces Ferry Rd. The school is located at 1424 West Paces Ferry Rd.
