The state cross country championships were held last Saturday at Carrollton High School. The Landmark Christian boys and girls ran in the Class A meet, while the Fayette County boys and the McIntosh girls ran in the Class AAAAA meet.

Landmark's boys won the Class A meet for the second year in a row, while the girls placed fourth overall. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs finished in third place while the Fayette County boys placed seventh.

Landmark's boys team dominated the Class A competition. They had four finishers in the top ten and scored 38 points overall. Blake Fertitta finished second overall with a time of 17:07. He was followed by Clark Rivers in third place at 17:10, Eric Sumner in fifth place (17:33) and Joe register in eighth (17:50).

The Landmark Lady War Eagles placed fourth overall with 132 points. Melissa register placed ninth overall with a time of 22:24.

For the Fayette County varsity boys, it was the best season ever. It was the first time in school history that the boys finished the season in the top ten in the state.

Trey Alverson, the Tigers' top runner, led his team with a fourth place finish in a field of 202 runners, and a time of 16:38. He received a medal for finishing in the top ten. Rounding out the field for the team was Jon Riley, Blake Riley, Blake Alverson, Adam Pekarske, John Miklas and Max Lothe.

Though the team did not have the best performance of the season on Saturday, they are pleased with what they did accomplish this season. The Tigers placed first in the region meet, second in the county championships, third in the Sandy Creek Invitational as well as the Jekyll Island Invitational, fourth in the Carrollton Invitational and sixth in the Westover Invitational.

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs placed third overall in the Class AAAAA meet with 117 points. Dana Van Winkle was the only runner for McIntosh to finish in the top ten. She placed sixth overall with a time of 20:13. The lady Chiefs will return a majority of the squad next year and should be in contention for the title yet again.
