Chiefs sweep county cross country championships By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The Fayette County Cross County Championship was held at Sandy Creek High School on Tuesday afternoon and all four county high schools competed. McIntosh's girls and Fayette County's boys were the favorite to win, but anything can happen in sports. McIntosh's girls did win the county championship. They have won the meet every year since 1990. The Lady Chiefs did it this year with 15 girls finishing in the top 20, seven of which finished in the top 10. McIntosh finished with 26 points overall, while Starr's Mill placed second with 55 points, Sandy Creek placed third with 81 points and Fayette County finished with -- points. The overall champion of the girls race was McIntosh's Elizabeth Gardner who finished with a time of 19:56. Starr's Mill had two finishers in the top 10, Ashley meredith, who placed second overall, and Katie Hughes, who placed 10th. Heather Kreibel finished 16th overall. Sandy Creek's Rae Lynch placed third overall, while Fayette County's Amy Eller finished 13th overall. McIntosh had the fourth through ninth place finishers, they were Mary katherine Crofton, Morgan Cunningham, Judy Thomasson, Dana Van Winkle, Keri Pendergrass and Megan Spencer. The boys race also went to McIntosh, which had won the meet every year since 1990 with the exception of last year. McIntosh finished with 28 points overall, while Fayette County placed second with 33 points, Starr's Mill finished third with 78 points and sandy Creek finished with 98 points. Fayette county's Trey Alverson was the overall champion of the race again this year, finishing in a time of 16:11. It was a close race with a fairly even distribution of runners. Fayette County had six runners in the top 20, while McIntosh had seven. Starr's Mill had four runners in the top 20 and Sandy Creek had three. Fayette County's Jon Riley finished behid trey Alverson, while McIntosh took the third through sixth positions with Randy hutchinson, Shaun Emery, Ben Brantley and Ian Hardy. Starr's Mill's Les Page finished seventh, wile Fayette County's Adam Pekarske and Blake Riley finished eighth and ninth respectively. McIntosh's Tony Luciano finished 10th. McIntosh does not have a meet this weekend and will rest up for the region meet which will be held Oct. 21 at Sandy Creek High School. Fayette County will compete this weekend at the Bleckley Invitational in Macon. |
