Lots of great football in store for fans this weekend

The chill in the air makes it the perfect weather for football.

The high school football games this week promise excitement as several of them have playoff implications.

Starr's Mill (6-0) travels to Stockbridge (1-4) this Friday. The Panthers have battled some of the top teams in the region this season and now face four teams in a row with losing records. It is important for the Panthers to stick to their game plan and to stay motivated. If they do, they should have an undefeated season and great momentum going into the playoffs.

East Coweta (5-0) is possibly playing the best football it has played all season right now. The team will travel to Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton Saturday afternoon to take on the Lovejoy Wildcats. Lovejoy is tough. It played Starr's Mill very hard last week and lost a close one to Evans the week before. This is a great match-up and a win by the Indians will nearly seal the deal on another trip to the playoffs.

Creekside (6-0) is coming off a 35-0 win over Woodward Academy. This week, the team will travel to take on Salem High School (4-1) Saturday night. Salem puts up a lot of points; it defeated Westlake last week 37-29. Creekside, however has given up double digit points only twice this season, 13 to Cedartown and 12 to Sandy Creek. Look for the Seminoles to stay undefeated if their defense can slow Salem down.

Northgate (5-1) scored a lot of points last week as it defeated Callaway 49-21. The team gets to rest this week before closing out the season with games at Greenville and Lamar County and then two games at home against Decatur and Grady.

Sandy Creek (3-2) will host Heritage High School (2-3) Friday night. If the Sandy Creek Patriots have their way, the offense will put up some points and their defense will stop the Heritage Patriots in their tracks. Heritage has lost two region games in a row and has given up an average of 24 points in those two games. Sandy Creek, ranked eighth in AAAA, needs a big win to generate some momentum for the next two games, which are on the road.

Fayette County (1-5) celebrates its homecoming Friday night with a game against Jonesboro (3-2). The Cardinals have faced some of the lighter teams in the region and should match up well with the Tigers. The Tigers have come close to pulling off some wins over the past few weeks and the excitement of homecoming may be enough to push them over. They have the talent... now they need some luck.

McIntosh (1-4) hosts Riverdale (3-3) Friday. The Chiefs controlled the ball and the clock last week against Newnan, but lost 42-7. If they can stick with their game plan, the results should be vastly different. Jim O'Shea has had some big games for the Chiefs in recent weeks and he and the rest of the team need to have another one this Friday. The last time the Chiefs played at home, they won.

Landmark Christian (1-5) hosts Jefferson (4-1) Friday. The War Eagles have not had an easy season but they do have hard-working, talented players. Eventually, all the pieces will come together and they will produce a big win. This could be the week if the offense and defense can both put up some points.
