Patriots have two Heisman nominees

The state of Georgia will forever be linked with the Heisman Award because of its namesake, Georgia Tech's former coach, John W. Heisman. Herschel Walker and Frank Sinkwich, both players for the University of Georgia, were the only two people from Georgia teams to ever win the award. Walker won it in 1982 and Sinkwich won the award in 1942. Soon, there may be another link to the award.

Sandy Creek High School has two nominees for the 2000 Wendy's High School Heisman Award, Rae Lynch and J.R. Lemon. The two seniors are excellent atheltes and students and are desrving of the recognition and the award.

Lynch is captain of the girl's cross country team. She has been named All League, All County, and All State in Cross Country and has also been named All league in Track. Her peers have rated her the Most Valuable Player thre times in cross country and once in track. Along with her athletic achievements, Lynch has maintained a 3.7 grade point average, represented the French club in the Miss Sandy Creek Pageant last year and participated in the school science fair.

She has also served her community by volunteering for projects such as soup kitches, beautification projects, recycling and tutoring. She was also a state finalist for the Atlanta College of Art Award and won best of show for watercolor at the Great Frame Up.

J.R. Lemon is a member of the Sandy Creek football team. he holds school records in several categories, includingMost Yards Rushing and Most Touchdowns. he has been named All County, All League, All State and All American and has shown great leadership as both a Co-Captain and Captain in his career aty Sandy Creek.

Lemon has also lettered in basketbal and is an active member of the track team. he was named All State in track and holds the school record in the 400 meter dash. Lemon was named MVP by his peers in football and track thre times. His academic achievements are just as amazing. He has maintained a 3.78 grade point average in his four years as a Patriot.

Lemon's talents have been widely recognized outside of high school. He has been voted First-Team Reebok All American, Georgia High School magazine "Magnificent 7", Atlanta Journal Constitution "Super 11", 1999 County offensive Player of the Year, and 1999 County Player of the Year. Additionally, Lemon was named number five running back in the nation in Rivals.com's "Super 100."

"J.R. and Rae have achieved tremendous success throughout their high school careers, and they've done it in a positive, example-setting way, " said Dr. Charles Warr, principal of Sandy Creek High School. "Looking beyond their trophies and awards, these are quality students with well-rounded backgrounds. They serve as role models in our school and as remarkable citizens within the community."
