Hey, can you get out of work early on Tuesday ? If you can swing it, it will be worth your while. The Fayette County Cross Country Championship will be held at Sandy Creek High School at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and the competition has never been closer.

In the boys race, Fayette County is probably the favorite. They are the only local team ranked in the top ten and their top five runners do a good job of packing together. Trey Alverson has finished first overall in several races this season and will try to do it again on Tuesday.

That said, Starr's Mill, Sandy Creek and McIntosh are no sloches on the course either and both squads will be keyed up for the race. The Chiefs are still trying to qualify for the state meet and it should be easier to do that on this course than on any other. Sandy Creek is also the site of the region championship, so it is important for all teams to perform well here and to continue dropping times.

For the girls, McIntosh is the favorite and has been getting solid performances from their top runners. They have also had to deal with injuries again this season, which may slow the gelling of the team. Sandy Creek has a great runner in Rae Lynch, Fayette County has a Great runner in Jessica Tyre and Starr's Mill has a squad that sticks together fairly well and could put up a lot of points quickly.

The Landmark Christian School boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Schlotzky's Cross Country Invitational in Anderson, SC on a beautiful, crisp, cool Saturday morning.

The varsity boys team finished eighth overall among 32 teams and received a plaque for coming in first over all Class "A" schools. Clark Rivers received a medal for placing 4th in a time of 16:51. Four others finished in the following order:

Joseph Register 17:47(personal best)

Scott Emery 18:43

Jeff Noble 18:57

Dustin McDonald 19:17

Interstate 85 in South Carolina was closed due to a wreck. As a result the Landmark bus arrived at the meet just as the gun went off for the Varsity Girls Race. So, this week the girls competed in the junior varisty race, finished third overall and ran their best team time for the year in 2:05. Their harriers were led by Melissa Register, (who was crowned Homecoming Queen the night before) placing second overall in 22:19. Courtney Piribek finished ninth with a personal best of 23:44. Mary Michael Joiner, finished 14th with a time of 24:40, also a personal best. Jenny Cone ran a 27:56, Sarah King came in with a 27:27, Kate Bailey ran a 27:56, Meredith Gable, 28:40, Danielle Taussig, 29:42, Layla Constable, 30:04, and Andrea Wooding finished with a 32:31.

The Landmark teams will compete in the McIntosh Trail Run this weekend, which is just outside of Whitesburg, Ga., on the Chattahooche River.
