Coffeehouse coming to new venue this weekend

The Stars on the Southern Crescent coffeehouse, presented by Offshoot Productions, has been staged at many venues in Fayette County since its inception.

The newest venue for the coffeehouse is perhaps the one where Offshoot now feels most comfortable; the LaFayette Educational Center, better known as the old Fayette County High School. The group's last several productions have been produced in the band room and the space is very intimate, which is ideal for a production like the coffeehouse.

The Saturday, Sept. 23, Stars on the Southern Crescent coffeehouse will showcase the acoustic duo of Grubbs and Imes, whose original and traditional songs span blues, gospel, folk and rock. Grubbs and Imes have been together for a long time and their talent and chemistry is clear to all audiences.

Performances by singer/actors Brian Turner and Bettina, accompanied by Martha Clarke on piano, complete the program. Both Bettina and Turner have been working with Offshoot Productions for the last year and are certain to wow audiences yet again this weekend.

Turner portrayed John in last winter's Scotland Road, and played and the Frog Prince and Robin Hood in last summer's two participatory musicals for children. Bettina played the Woman in Scotland Road, as well as Maide Marian and Princess Rosalie in the summer.

Turner, who was raised in Atlanta, spent most of his adult life in Massachusetts and California, playing such roles as Carl in "The Baltimore Waltz," Seymour in "Little Shop of Horrors" and Rev. Dimmesdale in "The Scarlet Letter."

Bettina, who is an interpreter for hearing impaired students at Peeples Elementary School, has credits ranging from Maria in "West Side Story" to Tuptim in "The King and I." Last spring, she was the Fairy Queen at the Georgia Renaissance Festival.

LaFayette Educational Center is at 205 LaFayette Ave., just northwest of the Courthouse Square. Doors open at 7:45 p.m., and the show begins at 8:15. General admission is $7; $5 for senior citizens and children under 12. Group rates and reserved tables for eight or more are available with payment in advance.

Patrons who bring their mugs from home are eligible for discounts on hot beverages and for the "most unusual mug" award. For information, phone 770-631-2362 or e-mail offshootpr@aol.com.
