There may be nothing finer than a county fair and the Fayette County Kiwanis Fair is no exception.

The fair kicks off Monday, Sept. 25 and Fayette County residents will be treated to carnival rides, midway games, informative booths, exhibitions, entertainment and more. There will be a drawing for $100 during each night of the fair.

Monday's festivities start with the Fayette County-based band, Phlox. Phlox features graduates from Fayette County High School that play a wide variety of music from soft rock to heavy metal. On top of their original material, Phlox does amazing covers of "Johnny B. Goode," "Crazy Train" and "Another One Bites The Dust." The band formed in 1997 and has one CD, entitled "Da Raw Deal." They are currently putting the finishing touches on their second release. Phlox will play from 8-10 p.m.

The entertainment starts back up Friday evening with an exhibition from Miss Patsy's School of Dancing, which will perform from 7-8 p.m. At 8 p.m. the Allen Goodman Band takes the stage. Goodman is a Brooks resident and a senior at Starr's Mill High School. He and his band play good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino, as well as Southern rock and country music.

Goodman plays keyboard and sings, while Lance Bowen plays rhythm guitar, Jimmy White plays lead guitar, Dennis Southern plays bass and Ken Colson plays drums.

Goodman began playing piano in the third grade but did not like the style of music he was being taught. His grandfather, Dwight Motley, then taught him the basic chords for rock 'n' roll and he learned the rest through practice. Goodman and his band will perform 8-10 p.m.

Saturday's festivities begin with the Home Depot Children's Workshop from 2-4 p.m. This will be followed by the first Fayette County Chili Cook-Off at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to enter the cook-off and there is no entry fee for the contest. Simply prepare your own homemade chili and bring it to the fair in a crock pot or electric cooker.

Admission to the fair is free with your pot of chili. Registration is from 4:30-5 p.m. and the contest and tastings are 5-6 p.m.

The chili will be judged and then the festival will provide spoons and cups for all to taste. The first place winner gets $100.

The final act of the evening and the festival will be Justus from 8-10 p.m. Justus will sweep the crowd off its feet with a blend of electric and acoustic blues, soul music and classic rock. Lead vocalist Ted Cook, lead guitarist Greg Hyder, guitarist Ray Ellis, bassist Jon Wade and drummer Greg Rogers promise a fun evening of classic music to which you can dance, sing or just enjoy listening.

It will be the highlight to the fair's final night, so don't miss it.
