Gore's 'reinvented' government is sick

Al Gore’s reinvention of government apparently included a resurgence of wasteful spending and lackadaisical bookkeeping bordering on malfeasance. Government agencies investigating Clinton-Gore Administration spending of taxpayer dollars found the following:

House Budget Committee: Medicare, $12.6 million in overpayments in 1998; Supplement Security Income program, $1 billion lost to fraud; HUD, $18 billion in waste.

Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA): Medicaid loses an estimated $17 billion annually to fraud. (HCFA has no plan to investigate these loses.)
Agriculture Department: $660 million stolen annually from 1996-1998 in the Food Stamp Program.

General Accounting Office: EPA Superfund Program (clean-up of pollution sites), $6 of every $10 spent is on support activities, not cleanup; U.S. Army cannot account for $833 million in shipped inventory.

Contractor Accounting Firm: Department of Education unable to account for $500 million in unawarded contracts and has $6 billion dollar discrepancy with Treasury Department.

Small Business Administration: $56 million lost on loans liquidated in 1994 due to errors in liquidation process.

House and Senate Leadership: Federal regulations cost taxpayers from $230 billion to more than $700 billion annually.

Irrespective of this estimation, the Clinton-Gore Administration refuses to require the federal government to analyze the cost/benefit ratio for each agency, or for their programs, rules and regulations.

By contrast, if you want to drain a pond, you must submit an environmental impact statement.

Mr. Gore’s idea of “reinventing government” has simply made it more inefficient, ineffective and wasteful. Gore does not deserve our support in November.
