Brewers
keep on rolling through postseason By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The 13 and 14 year old Sharpsburg Brewers recently finished an undefeated regular season and headed to the District Tournament held at Rex Park. The team, managed by Mark Taylor, played four games in five days at the tournament and remain undefeated. The first match was against the Sharpsburg Expos. The Brewers won by a score of 8-3, receiving excellent pitching from Andrew Brown, Ryan Wetzl and Dane Helmly. Helmly pitched two days later when the Brewers faced the Riverdale Marlins and won by a score of 9-1. The team got a boost from Danny Dancy, who hit homeruns in both the third and fourth innings, and Neil Casey, the Brewers catcher, who threw two Marlins out at secon base and drove in two RBIs. The third game for the Brewers at the District Tournament was against the Jonesboro Angels. Andrew Brown pitched seven innings and struck out 12 Jonesboro batters. The Angels scored in the first inning and were kept off the board for the remainder of the game. Ryan Wetzl hit a three run homerun in the fifth inning and Rex Crane hit a two run homerun in the sixth inning as the Brewers won by a score of 10-2. For the championship game of the division tournament the Brewers faced the McDonough Diamond Backs. The Brewers were on fire. Dane Helmly and Rex Crane combined to pitch four innings. They did not allow a run and completely shut down the Diamond Back offense. Chris Hall and Kirk Holt each scored twice as the Brewers defeated the Diamond Backs, 16-0. The Brewers now advance to the next round, the Sub State Championships, which will be held in McDough at the South Cedar Recreation Complex. |
