The drkoop.com USTA Women's Championships of Peachtree City are continuing through Sunday. The action, so far, has been as intense as the heat. Several players from the area have been faring well in both the singles and doubles play.

Jewel Peterson of College Park, Ga. lost in the qualifying round but was brought back on Tuesday as a lucky loser when Lana Milhocek could not play. Peterson made the most of it by winning, 6-1, 7-5. She was scheduled to face Yoon-Jeong Cho of South Korea on Thursday.

Ansley Cargill of Atlanta faced Janet Walker of Seffner, Fla. on Wednesday and lost, 7-6(1), 0-6, 7-5. Erin Burdette faced Bradenton, Fla.'s Sandra Cacic on Wednesday and lost , 6-3, 6-2. Burdette and Cargill are still alive in doubles play.

Lindsay Lee-Waters of Atlanta has teamed up with Jessica Steck of South Africa for doubles play. They played Erica Adams and Martha Garzone-Elkins and won, 6-0, 6-4. Adams is another girl from the area.

Cargill teamed up with Wendy Fix of Kenilworth, IL, are doubles partners. They were scheduled to meet Maria Pavlidou and Jackie Trail on Thursday afternoon.

Last year's champion, Alina Jidkova of Russia had a tough Tursday ahead of her. Her macth against Australia's Cindy watson was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. That match was delayed for several hours due to other matches being delayed because of inclement weather. The match began at 9 p.m. and was postponed after another thunderstorm broke out. It was rescheduled to be the second match on Thursday and if Jidkova won, she would play again as the fourth match.

Jidkova's doubles match was also scheduled for Thursday, but may be changed to early on Friday. Her partner is Jolene Watanabe. They were scheduled to face Adria Engel and Janet Walker.

The tournament has been filled with great performances, as players have fought tooth and nail the whole way. There have been several upsets already in the tournament, including Jolene Watanabe, the third seed, falling to Nirupam Vaidyanathan of India on Tuesday evening.

The tournament is also doing a great job in raising money for the Fayette County Council on Domestic Violence. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support the group, which provides assistance for victims of domestic abuse and their families.

Play of the drkoop.com USTA Women's Championships will continue through the weekend. The finals in singles and doubles are scheduled for Sunday afternoon. For ticket or schedule information, call the Peachtree City Tennis Center at 770-486-9474.
