Opening Friday

Gladiator — The summer movie season officially begins with this film, which cost over $100 million to make. Russell Crowe (The Insider) stars as Maximus, a soldier who is enslaved and must fight for honor and survival. Rated R.

Now Playing

28 Days — Sandra Bullock stars in this drama-comedy about a recovering alcoholic. Directed by Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie and Private Parts), 28 Days should be just quirky enough to work. Rated PG-13.

Final Destination — A young man sees a vision of his flight exploding and gets off the plane. He cheated Death and now Death is stalking him and his friends. It is an interesting premise. Rated R.

The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas — A new Flinstone movie with a new cast. This film focuses on the early years. Call it When Fred met Wilma or When Barney met Betty). P.S. Harvey Korman reprises his role as The Great Gazoo. Rated PG.

Frequency — A man connects with his father 30 years in the past thanks to a magic ham radio. Dennis Quaid stars. Rated PG-13.

Gossip — Eric Bogosian stars with a cast of hot young talent in this drama about back stabbing in high school. Rated R.

Keeping The Faith — Edward Norton and Ben Stiller star as a priest and a rabbi in this quirky romantic comedy. Jenna Elfman (Dharma) plays the woman they both love. Rated PG-13.

Love and Basketball — A female basketball player loves her hoops and her man. This looks to be another inspiring sports movie. Rated PG-13.

Ready to Rumble — In the vein of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, two wrestling fans go on a zany adventure, meeting wrestlers and Nitro girls. This film was pretty funny, albeit lowbrow. David Arquette is the best thing about the film. Rated PG-13.

Return to Me — David Duchovny and Minnie Driver star in this romantic comedy about two very guarded people opening themselves up for love. Aww, I never knew you had it in you, Mulder. Rated PG.

Rules of Engagement — Samuel L. Jackson is on trial for alleged war crimes and it is up to Tommy Lee Jones to clear his name and bring down the real man responsible. Rated R.

The Road to El Dorado — Dreamworks brings us the animated tale of two men's search for the Lost City of Gold. Elton John and Tim Rice did the music, so expect this to be in next year's Oscar program. Rated G.

Scream 3 — The final part of the Scream trilogy will be re-released this Friday. The preceding two films were better overall, but Scream 3 has merit. It is funny, scary and worth a viewing. Rated R.

U-571 — An American submarine crew in WWII finds a German submarine and must battle to stay alive. Matthew McConaughey and Harvey Keitel star. Rated PG-13.

Where The Heart Is — A girl gives birth to a baby and lives in a hidden corner of a Wal-Mart. Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd and Stockard Channing star. Rated PG-13.

Where The Money Is — Quirky? You betcha. Paul Newman and Linda Fiorentino star in this movie about an aging hustler making one more heist. Just... please no love story. My mom said it was a nice, fun movie with great performances. Rated PG-13.

Also Playing

Bicentennial Man — Robin Williams stars as a robot who yearns to be human. This film got mild reviews and was very unassuming and non-challenging. This would be the place to see it. Rated PG.

Galaxy Quest — A very fun movie that leaves you begging for a Galaxy Quest 2. The cast was great (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver) and the jokes are great. Rated PG.

Girl, Interrupted — Winona Ryder's character gets institutionalized because of a suicide attempt. During her recovery, she finds some true friends and her sanity. Angelina Jolie won an Oscar for her role in the film. Rated R.

Here On Earth — Chris Klein, Leelee Sobieski and some other guy star in this three-edged love story. Klein was fantastic in Election and American Pie. This might be OK. Rated PG-13.

Music Of The Heart — Meryl Streep teaches inner city kids about music and love. Rated PG.

Next Friday — The sequel to the popular film starring Ice Cube. Chris Tucker (Smokey) does not appear in the film and that is really too bad. Rated R.

Stuart Little — Based on E.B. White's children's story, Stuart is a small mouse that lives with a normal sized human family. This was really very good. It maintained the tone of a children's novel and did not go for the slapsticky, Home Alone type gags. Rated PG.

The Green Mile — Tom Hanks plays a guard on death row who witnesses several miracles performed by a condemned man. Rated R.

The Sixth Sense — A little boy sees dead people and Bruce Willis tries to help him. Nominated for many Academy Awards, this movie is a gem. It has been in theaters since July. Rated PG-13.

The Whole Nine Yards — Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry star in this film about a hit man and a very nervous man in suburbia. Guess which one plays which ? This movie did very well in the big theaters and now can be seen for a dollar. Sounds good to me. Rated R.

The World Is Not Enough — James Bond returns to stop the bad guys and love the ladies. Denise Richards plays Christmas Jones. Rated PG-13.

Toy Story 2 — Surpassing the original in animation and humor, Toy Story 2 brings back all your favorite toys and introduces you to a few new ones. Worth the price of admission. Rated G.
