Lady Panthers and Lady Chiefs are regional champions in track

The Starr's Mill Lady Panthers and the Sandy Creek Lady Patriots track and field teams met in the Region 4-AAA Girls Track and Field Championship earlier this week.

Starr's Mill won the meet with 34 overall points, while Morrow High School took second place with 28 points and Riverdale finished third with 27 points. Sandy Creek placed sixth with 18 points.

Starr's Mill scored points in a number of events. The team's 4x400-meter relay team placed fourth overall with a time of 4:13.38, while the 4x100-meter relay team placed sixth. In the women's 200-meter dash, C.C. Shipmon and Iceland Williams finished sixth and seventh respectively with times of 28.00 and 28.07. In the 800-meter run, Katie Hughes and Cassie Shular finished third and fourth respectively with times of 2:33.59 and 2:33.82.

The Lady Panthers also got a first and second place finish in the 1,600-meter run from Eva Massmann and Ashley Meredith, who finished in times of 5:31.36 and 5:34.10 respectively. Erika Junasz took second in the shot put with a distance of 30'04.50, and Carmen Williams took second in the discus with a distance of 94'07.00.

Sandy Creek had a first place finisher in Alexis McCoy, who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.66. Millicent Thomas came in fifth in the event with a time of 1:03.94. Mandi Harrington took sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:42.66, while Rae Lynch placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run with 5:41.74. Jessica White placed second in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 16.16. She also placed second in the 300-meter low hurdles with 47.64.

Jennifer Worsham placed fith in the long jump with a jump of 16'03.75. Ashley Lott placed third in the shot put with a throw of 30'02.50, while Jessica DeMooney placed seventh with a throw of 29'04.00. DeMooney also placed third in the discus throw with a toss of 92'06.50.

Both teams will have entrants in the AAA state meet.

In other track news, the McIntosh girls track team won the Girls 4-AAAA Meet last week. Dana Van Winkle won the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run and Keri Pendergrass finished 2nd in the 800 meter run to qualify for the Girls State AAAA Track Meet which will be held next week in Albany, Georgia.

Britte Hardy won the 200 meter and 400meter dash with Evita Smith finishing 2nd in the 100 meter dash to qualify individually for the state meet.

Additionally, the Girls 4 X 100M relay team qualified by finishing 2nd. That relay team consisted of Tabitha Lowey, Ansley Franke, Evita Smith, and Britt Hardy.

The boys team finished the region today and only had one member qualify for the Boys State AAAA Meet, Sean Heaton in the pole vault. Heaton finished first by vaulting 11 feet.
