Five wins for teams in state playoffs

Starr's Mill and McIntosh's boys and girls soccer teams began the first round of the state playoffs this week, as did the Fayette County Lady Tigers. So far the county is 5-0.

McIntosh's girls hosted Lakeside-Evans on Tuesday night and won by a score of 15-0. The lady Chiefs were ahead 11-0 at the half and produced four more goals in the second half to invoke the mercy rule. Goals were scored by Julie Herdic, who now has 56 goals on the year, Melanie Schneider, who added three goals, and Tabitha Lowey and Dana Van Winkle, each scoring two goals a piece. The Lady Chiefs are slated to host a game in the second round on Friday at 6 p.m.

The McIntosh boys faced Warner-Robins on Tuesday night and won by a score of 5-0. Omar Jarun scored the first goal for the Chiefs, giving them a 1-0 lead at the half. McIntosh took control in the second half. Beau Balesky scored 10 minutes into the second half. He was followed by Travis Britt who scored off of a corner kick and Nick Corley. Britt also scored the fifth goal of the game. The Chiefs are scheduled to face Colquitt County at 8 p.m. on Friday night. Colquitt County is 14-2-1 and defeated Windsor Forest, 2-1 in the first round.

The Starr's Mill boys faced Hardaway on Tuesday night and won by a score of 3-0. Sammy Chang got the first goal for the Panthers, who took a 1-0 lead into the half. Starr's Mill then got goals from Jason Daley and Robert Cooper in the second half to give them the win. Starr's Mill will play at Statesboro on Friday night at 6 p.m. Statesboro is 14-2-2 overall and defeated Westover in the first round of the playoffs by a score of 5-2.

Starr's Mill's girls played Shaw on Wednesday night and won by a score of 15-0. The defending state champions dominated from the first minute and will host a game this Friday or Saturday. The opponent was not determined by press time.

Fayette County's girls defeated the Houston County Lady Bears in overtime in Houston County on Wednesday night. Mandy Kovach, Christine Wix and Dana Teat scored goals for the Lady Tigers, as they won by a score of 3-1. Fayette County will host Wayne County on Saturday at 12 p.m.
