Crash survivor Jerry Schemmel is featured speaker at Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel banquet

Jerry Schemmel is scheduled to be the guest speaker at a banquet hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel on Monday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Atlanta Airport Marriott.

Schemmel has been the radio voice of the Denver Nuggets since 1992. He also is a survivor of the 1989 crash of United Airlines flight 232 and author of the book “Chosen to Live,” which will be offered for sale at the banquet.

On July 19, 1989, Schemmel boarded United Airlines flight 232, originating in Denver and bound for Chicago. An in-flight explosion forced the crippled plane to crash land in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 112 of the 296 people on board. The video of the crash landing by a local television station became the most watched piece of news footage in American television history.

After escaping the burning plane, Schemmel reentered the wreckage and rescued an 11-month-old baby. His book, “Chosen to Live,” chronicles the crash of flight 232 and its subsequent effects on his life. He is a highly sought-after motivational speaker.

Schemmel's sportscasting career spans 16 years and includes radio and television play-by-play of college football and basketball, as well as basketball coverage for the NBA. He also spent one year as deputy commissioner and general legal counsel for the Continental Basketball Association.

He lives in Littleton, Colo. with his wife Diane, seven-year-old daughter Maggie, and infant son Ryan.

The first ticket purchased for the banquet is $25, with each additional ticket priced at $20. Schemmel's book is priced at $20. Early reservations are recommended and the community is invited to attend.
