Tuesday night saw some big regional matchups, giving fans, coaches and players an idea of what is in store during next week's regional tournament. Both Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill faced tough competitors in Woodward Academy and Riverdale, respectively.

The Lady Patriots played very close to the Lady War Eagles until late in the second half. The teams went into the locker room at half time tied 18-18. Both teams played good defense, but it was foul shots that led Woodward to the win. Woodward Academy made 14 of 18 free throws in the second half, and won 55-38. Maya Hughes led the Lady Patriots in scoring with 18 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Lott chipped in 13 points in the loss

The Sandy Creek boys team played tight against Woodward and outlasted them, winning by a score of 49-47. The Patriots were down by one going into the fourth quarter, which is when L.T. Lockett turned it on. Lockett scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, pushing his team into third place in the sub-region. The team also got great performances from William Belton, Jermaine Harris and Olive McGee. Sandy Creek faced Riverdale in a make up game on Wednesday night and will host Starr's Mill at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Starr's Mill faced Riverdale on Tuesday evening. The Lady Panthers played the Lady Raiders close for the first half, trailing only 27-22 at the half. Riverdale pulled away in the second half though, outscoring Starr's Mill, 23-16. Lauren Boyd played great defense for the Lady Panthers despite the loss. The last time the two teams faced each other Riverdale scored over 70 points. Brady Ragan led Starr's Mill in scoring with eight points, while Amy Holloway added seven.

The game went pretty much the same for the Starr's Mill boys team. The Panthers trailed 23-21 at the half, only to have Riverdale pull away towards the end of the third quarter. Starr's Mill played good defense and got a number of points in spurts to keep them close, but the Raiders proved to be too much to handle, winning 63-45. Donny Lampen scored 15 points and pulled down six rebounds for Starr's Mill and Matt Houck contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Starr's Mill faced a tough opponent in North Clayton on Wednesday night and will face Sandy Creek on Friday night.
