Hecht vote to split Fayette puts party over people On Monday, State Senator Greg Hecht voted for the most insane map for proposed senate districts. The map that Hecht supported would break this county into three separate state senate districts, largely diluting the voting power of Fayette County. One of the districts runs from the middle part of Fayette through Spalding, Henry, Newton, Rockdale and Walton counties! It is like a snake, attempting to dilute as many Republican strongholds as possible. Also, according to the law, the senate districts can only be within plus or minus 5 percent of the average population. The Democrats took this requirement and began playing with the numbers: no predominantly Democrat districts are anywhere near plus-5 percent population. They did this because they drew districts that would vote Democrat most of the time. The Republican districts are all overpopulated in an attempt to dilute the voting base of the Republicans and turn more seats over to the Democrats. So, my question to Sen. Hecht is simple: Why did you vote to put your party ahead of your constituents in Fayette? Why would you vote for a plan that puts Fayette County in a district with Spalding, Henry, Newton, Rockdale and Walton counties? William Norris NorrisJoel@cs.com
