The new cart path bridge that will span the CSX railroad tracks in Peachtree City will be installed beginning Friday, Sept. 15, officials said.

At 7 p.m. that evening, westbound traffic on Ga. Highway 54 in the area will be restricted to one lane between Huddleston Road and Market Place so the bridge can be assembled, officials said. The following Sunday crews are expected to lift the bridge onto its supports, which will require traffic to be stopped completely.

The road will be completely reopened by 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18.

“We know the lane closure is going to cause an inconvenience to residents and is especially frustrating since the highway just reopened and traffic has been flowing so much better,” said City Engineer Dave Borkowski. “However, once the path connections are installed, residents will have a much easier and safer access to the neighborhoods and businesses in the area via the paths.”

The bridge is part of a system that will allow carts and other path users to traverse from one side of Ga. Highway 54 to the other in addition to crossing the railroad tracks. Once the bridge is in, the system won’t be ready yet, as the cart path connections are still being designed, according to Borkowski.

The connections should be completed by April 2007, Borkowski said.
