These recalls were issued this week from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24 by various federal and state agencies. -----------------– Children’s science kits pose burn hazard School Specialty Publishing is recalling “Ideal” and “Brighter Child” Brand Science Kits sold nationwide from July 2004 to May 2006. The battery case in the science kit can overheat, posing a thermal burn hazard. This recall involves Ideal and Brighter Child-brand science kits. Models included are “All About Electricity,” “All About Magnets,” “The Science Search Lab: Electricity,” and “The Science Search Lab: Light.” Consumers can return the kits to the place of purchase or School Specialty for a refund. More info at www.recalls.org. ----------------- Toy airplanes sold at Toys R Us can overheat Spin Master Toys are recalling Air Hogs RC Skywinder Radio-Controlled Airplanes sold exclusively at Toys R Us from April 2006 to June 2006. The rechargeable battery pack inside the toy airplane can overheat posing a burn hazard. The recalled radio-controlled toy airplane is lightweight, made of silver or black Styrofoam, and measures 19 inches from wingtip to wingtip. “Air Hogs Skywinder” is printed on the plane’s wings. “©2003 Spin Master Ltd” is printed on the right propeller mount. A date code beginning with 06XXXXHM is located under the plane’s propeller, on the outside of the controller unit and inside the controller’s battery compartment, and on the charger unit’s stand. When the lawnmower is operated, the replacement blade can crack and pieces can break away, posing a serious laceration hazard. The recalled blades are sold for use as replacement parts under the Oregon® and Silver Streak® brands only. The recalled blades are red and marked “MADE IN USA,” “GRASS SIDE CX”, “Oregon” or “SILVER STREAK.” The part numbers are: 99-111, 99-112, 99-113, 99-114, 99-117, 99-118, 99-926, 99-930 and date codes: BL, BM, BN, BP, BQ, BR, BS, BT, BU, BV, BW, BX, BY, BZ, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CF, CG, CH, CJ, CK, CL, CM, CN, CP. These lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The recalled lithium-ion batteries were used with the following computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. An electrical component in the lawnmowers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The mowers were sold under both the Black & Decker and Craftsman brand names. The recalled Black & Decker mowers have the model CMM1000 or CMM1000R and are labeled as Type 1 through Type 4. The Craftsman-brand mowers have model number 900.370520 and include all date codes and types. The legs on the picnic table can buckle or break during use, causing the table to collapse or fold unexpectedly. The backpack’s battery pack can overheat causing the battery case to melt, presenting a burn hazard. This recall involves children’s Cool Blue backpacks with lights and reflective trim. Style number 175732 is printed on a label attached to the left side of the main compartment. Consumers with the affected backpacks are being sent a replacement backpack and battery pack with instructions to return the original product. The handlebars, wheels and wheel brakes can break and detach. This recall involves F Forward Firestreet scooters. The red or blue aluminum scooters have a fold-down frame and model number BZ 020 SP. The F Forward logo is noted on the stem, wheel or base deck of the scooter. Consumers return the scooter to the nearest Target store for a $24 gift card, plus applicable sales tax. The paint on the bendable toys contains excessive levels of lead. The recalled toy is made of bendable plastic and is in the shape of dogs and cats. The toys are about 3.75 inches tall. The toy’s packaging is labeled as item 39/1461-K and 39/1461-KM. Consumers should immediately take the toys away from children and discard them. If the bell inside the instrument is damaged during manufacturing, the bell can be pulled out of the instrument, posing a choking hazard. The musical instrument is a wooden cylinder with end caps and wooden dowels connecting the caps. A single bell is in the middle. Model number 5-30-00740 is sold individually; Model number 0-06-09005 is sold as part of a kit called Busy Days Home, which also contains a board book, a compact disc and a poster. Consumers were sent instructions on how to examine the cage bell instruments for defects. If defects are found, they were instructed to dispose of the instruments and contact Kindermusik for a free replacement.
