Whitewater wins silver division of softball tournamentWed, 08/23/2006 - 10:37am

The high school softball season got underway last week and things have gone well for some teams and not as well for others. Whitewater won the silver division of the Up the Creek tournament and got wins over East Coweta, Henry County, Jones County, Newnan and Sandy Creek. The Wildcats played at Fayette County last night after the paper went to press. Fayette County lost their first three games of the season last week and made seven errors in their first two games. The Lady Tigers opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Sandy Creek and followed it with a 5-4 loss to Northside, Warner Robins. Kristen West drove in two runs and Chasity Welch drove in another in the loss. Fayette County then fell to North Cobb, 1-0, despite outhitting their opponents 6-3. The team also lost to Dutchtown (5-0) and Newnan (3-0) before getting a forfeit win over Cedar Grove and a 6-3 win over Henry County to close out the tournament. They finsihed first in the Garnet division. Sandy Creek started their season with wins against Woodward Academy (5-0) and Fayette County (3-0) before falling to Ola 2-0. The Lady Patriots then got a 1-0 win over Starr’s Mill, tied Eagle’s Landing Christian 1-1 after Erin Braswell hit an RBI in the sixth inning, beat Cedar Grove 14-1, lost to Whitewater 5-2 and beat Newnan 7-2 to finish second in the silver division. Starr’s Mill split to open the season, beating Newan 2-0 but falling to Brookwood 2-0. They opened the tournament with a scoreless tie with Eagle’s Landing Christian and followed it up with a loss to Sandy Creek. The Lady Panthers then defeated Cedar Grove 10-0 and Ola 3-1 before falling to Dutchtown 3-1 and Chapel Hill 5-4. McIntosh has started their season with a 2-2 record. The Lady Chiefs defeated Grayson (1-0) and Mary Persons (7-0) in their first two games but followed it with losses to Parkview (2-1) and Evans (6-2). They hosted Woodward Academy last night after the paper went to press. Landmark Christian School attended the Diamond Classic softball tournament in Griffin, and went 1-4 over five games. Ashley Chastain, a senior at Landmark, played a large role both on the field and at the plate, striking out 32 batters, and hitting two triples and three RBI’s against North Clayton in a 12-0 win. Hailey McManus, a freshman, who went 3 for 3 including an RBI and a stolen base, also pitched against North Clayton, striking out four. Jenni Jobe went 7 for 12 at the plate with four stolen bases and otthers who scored for the Lady War Eagles included Laura Cooper, Molly Weir, Sadie Dunkin, and Melanie Crum. login to post comments |
