Last week, the Coweta County School System tallied 21,111 students, and the enrollment shows no sign of slowing down.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson said the total represents more than 800 additional students since students left in may for the summer break.

“We’ve been growing about 1,000 students a year, and that’s probably what we’ll have by the end of the school year,’ he added.

The first two weeks of school have seen the system’s switchboards light up with call from angry parents confused about their student’s transportation options and which bus the student should board. The system normally has a few problems at the beginning of each year, but this year’s problems were compounded by the opening of two schools and the system-wide redistricting that took place last year.

“The new districts have caused problems for the parents and us, but we’ve worked through the issues and things have started to smooth out,” Jackson said.

The redistricting efforts should prevent similar transportation snafus from happening next year, but the growth that has come to Coweta during the last 10 years is not expected to slow.

“We can almost count on opening a new school every one or two years,” said Jackson.
