Fairburn’s STG takes home 10 awards at first-ever MAT Awards

Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn hosted the first-ever Metropolitan Atlanta Theater Awards last Sunday evening and walked away with a number of awards, including Best Play.

Out of their 24 total nominations in both the play and musical categories, Southside walked away with 10 wins. Other theaters participating in the inaugural awards were The Henry Players, Act1 Theater, Cobb Playhouse and Studio, CATCo and Play by Play productions.

The theater’s production of “Damn Yankees” won four awards. Tommy McDaniel won Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Mr. Applegate, while Nathan Phillips and Dina Schwam won for Best Actor and Actress in Minor Supporting Roles for their performances as Vernon and Meg. In the technical categories, “Damn Yankees” also won for Best Lighting Design and Rick Lewis and Nancy Norris took home the award.

That duo also won for Best Lighting Design, Play for their work on “All My Sons,” which captured five other awards. Lewis won for Best Sound Design and the show also took home awards for Best Set Design, which went to Roger Johnson, Best Director for Marian Johnson, Best Actress for Janet Reed and Best Play.
