in a move that surprised many residents, the city of Senoia swore in a new councilman monday night to fill the unexpired term of Councilman Perry Benson.

Benson resigned July 26 after he moved out of town, and many assumed city officials would leave the seat vacant since the post is up for election in November.

But Monday night, the city swore in Maurice Grover, who lives in the Cumberland subdivision. Grover will serve until the end of the year. If he decides to run for election, Grover would have to qualify at the end of August and then could serve a full two-year term.

Qualifying for the seat now occupied by Grover and Councilman Bill Wood’s seat runs Aug 28-31. The qualifying runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30-noon Friday. The qualifying fee is $90.

The city faced a similar situation last year when then-Councilman Robert Belisle resigned his council seat to run for mayor. The city left the seat open until the November elections.
