After soundly defeating incumbent County Commissioner Linda Wells Tuesday in a runoff race, Jack Smith knows the race is not over.

“I’m not taking November lightly by any means,’ Smith said thursday morning.

With 37 of 38 precincts counted, Smith defeated Wells by a 3,884-2,649 tally. By garnering nearly 60 percent of the vote, Smith tuned the tables on Wells who received the most votes in the general election.

“It really shows all of the hard work of the people who supported me. They talked to friends in civic clubs and churches about me,” he added.

Now that he has the Republican nomination sewed up, Smith faces Democrat Rod Mack in the November 7 general election. He plans to work just as hard to win the November election, and if elected is ready to get busy on the Fayette County Commission.

“I want to focus on open dialogue and intergovernmental cooperation,” Smith said.

He’s hopeful that an easy transition will occur in January when two new commissioners join the board.

“I’ve talked to some of the other commissioners and they seem eager to help,” he added.
