Diligent shoppers discover S. Fulton home valuesTue, 11/08/2005 - 5:29pm

If good things come to those who wait, people looking for beautiful homes at value pricing are going to have a lot to cheer about. In South Fulton County, Mayfield Homes is building upscale communities at affordable prices. Last May, Vicki Smith moved to the Wilkerson Mill Park subdivision, one of eight created by Mayfield Homes, where she found everything in a home on her “dream list.” “It had to be all brick, have hardwood floors, a master bedroom on the main floor, a basement, granite counter tops with a back splash, and be in my price range,” said Vicki. She also wanted a safe place for her children to play. Across the street from the subdivision is Wilkerson Mill Park, which has five lighted baseball fields, a football field, two soccer fields, playgrounds, and a one-quarter mile walking trail, which was built by Mayfield Homes and donated on behalf of the residents of Wilkerson Mill Park. Located in Palmetto, just 30 minutes south of metro Atlanta, Mayfield has built 55 homes priced from $200,000-$300,000, in the Wilkerson Mill Park subdivision, which is already 80 percent sold. The 2,200-3,500 sq. ft. four-sided brick homes sit on one- to four-acre lots, and have either three or four bedrooms. Standard features include vaulted ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace, a two-car garage, and hardwood flooring in the foyer, kitchen and breakfast area. Ceramic tile and cultured marble countertops decorate all bathrooms. And homebuyers can choose most of their own selections, giving homebuyers the opportunity to design their home to suit their lifestyle. Sharmain Huggins visited the model home in Wilkerson Mill Park a few times and compared it to other homes being built in the area. She thought the Mayfield homes were built better and offered better value. “What other builders were charging for upgrades, Mayfield offered as standard features,” she said. “I also liked that the homes were on acre lots and not on top of each other, and that each house had its own distinct quality.” While homes in Wilkerson Mill Park were impressive to her, she ultimately decided on a larger home with five bedrooms in a nearby new Mayfield Homes community, Ashwood Estates, in Fairburn. Huggins has reserved a 2.46-acre lot there. The new community will begin breaking ground in November and will feature 25 exclusive homes on one- to six- acre estate lots priced from $359,000 to $500,000. Seventeen lots are still available. The Ashwood Estates homes will be made of four-sided brick with stone masonry accents and brick or stone stoops, and will have side entry garages, a basement, and customized floor plans. Standard interior features include oak hardwood throughout the first floor, granite counter tops, tile back splashes, stainless steel appliances and a side-by-side refrigerator. Buyers can choose among 10 different floor plans that include one or more fireplaces, three to five bedrooms, and three to four-and-a-half bathrooms. All bathrooms will have cultured marble countertops. Homes will feature two-piece crown molding, stained oak hardwood staircases, recessed lighting with a spotlight over each fireplace, custom interior columns, and built-in cabinets in the owner’s retreat and family room per plan. Plumbing includes one or two 50-gallon electric water heaters with a circulating pump, and each floor will have one HVAC system and a programmable thermostat. All homes feature two-year systems and 10-year structural warranties. Old World street lamps line the Ashwood Estates subdivision off South Fulton Parkway, which is surrounded by woods and rolling hills, and is close to Cochran Mill Nature Preserve and Shannon Mall. Huggins, whose fiancé will soon be retiring, sees buying this home as an investment. “In five years or more everything will be moving here, and we’ll have a lot of equity in that home.” To reach Ashwood Estates, take I-85 south to exit 69 (South Fu1ton Parkway). Travel south on SFP for approximately eight miles. Turn right onto Short Road and travel approximately one-half mile. Ashwood Estates is on the left. For Wilkerson Mill Park, take I-85 south to exit 69. Travel south on South Fulton Parkway for 10 miles. Turn left on Cascade Palmetto. Make a left on Wilkerson Mill road. Wilkerson Mill Park will be one mile on your left.
