Taylor Lee, age 15, of Fayetteville, has recently earned and been awarded the designation of Eagle Scout, the highest advancement rank in the Boy Scout program. The son of Dr. Dave and Mrs. Cheryl Lee, he began his scouting career as a Cub Scout with Pack 72 in Fayetteville. After joining Boy Scout Troop 72, he advanced through the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle Scout. Lee has been inducted into the Boy Scout honor organization of the Order of the Arrow, and he has completed the conferences for Junior Leadership Training. In the summer of 2005, Lee was chosen to be a member of National Jamboree Troop 1938 from the Flint River Boy Scout Council and they attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia. He also attended the Boy Scout High Adventure Base in the Florida Keys last summer. Based on a concept from Mrs. Jane Hannon, Director for Instructional Support at Hood Avenue Primary School, his Eagle Scout project built an outdoor mathematics center for the students at Hood Avenue. Research has shown that many primary age students learn more efficiently when the lessons include physical activity. Using square stepping stones numbered one to one hundred and arranged in a 10 x 10 grid, Lee and his fellow Boy Scouts created a learning center where students solve math problems in their mind, but physically move to the numbered block that answers the problem. The project also included an outdoor clock, and an outdoor compass for the students to use. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held on Saturday, April 22 at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, where Lee was honored and officially presented the Eagle Scout medal and badge of honor. Lee honored his grandfather Bill Smith with the presentation of the BSA Eagle Mentor pin at the ceremony. Lee also received a Georgia State flag flown over the state capitol, and a United States Flag flown over the national capitol in honor of his becoming an Eagle Scout. Lee is the grandson of Bill and Sara Smith from Forest Park, Georgia, and John and Merle Lee formerly of Red Oak, Georgia. login to post comments |
