The Coweta County School System is moving forward in its efforts towards ending a 1973 injunction surrounding racial issues.

The School Board voted Tuesday morning at a called meeting to allow board attorney Joe McNabb to seek unitary status for the system.

“The status means we’ve gotten rid of all vestiges of discrimination that existed in the system before 1969,” McNabb said Thursday.

The attorney said unitary status also makes the federal government have to prove that discrimination exists, instead of just applying previous court orders.

Last year, the school system underwent a major redistricting effort that sought to balance the population of school that were deemed racially identifiable under the 1973 ruling.

McNabb said he would pursue negotiations with the Department of Justice and update the board on his progress.
