‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’: Super movie, super laughsThu, 07/27/2006 - 2:20pm

In the new movie “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” Luke Wilson plays Matt Saunders, a nice guy who always ends up dating girls with, well let’s just say, some “mental stability” issues. When he meets Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman), a quiet art gallery manager, she seems perfect. What Matt doesn’t know is that his new girlfriend is also the well known superhero, G-Girl. While things are going great, Jenny reveals to Matt the secret she’s never told anyone, and swears Matt to secrecy. Meanwhile Matt continues to harbor a secret crush on his friend and coworker, Hannah (Anna Faris). A double date planned by Matt winds up with Hannah’s boyfriend calling to cancel and Jenny becoming extremely jealous of their friendship. That’s when Matt and Jenny’s relationship hits the skids. He tells Jenny he thinks they should take some time off and mistakenly believes she’ll just move on. Jenny decides to use her superhero powers to make Matt’s life a living nightmare. Holes in his apartment’s ceiling, humiliation and the loss of his job are just a few of the unpleasantries caused by Matt’s ex-girlfriend. When he finally gets up the nerve to tell Hannah how he really feels, he realizes that she is now in danger as well through her connection to him. Add to the plot a former childhood friend turned villain, a hilarious yet chauvinistic best bud side kick and a male model and you’ve got “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Rainn Wilson plays Matt’s best friend, Vaughn, a man of enormous confidence that is completely unearned. Matt inexplicably turns to Vaughn for advice on all things female which gives us a few hilarious scenes from the star of NBC’s “The Office.” Luke Wilson plays the straight man as always, just as his brother always plays the lovable screw-up, and Eddie Izzard plays Professor Bedlam- G-Girl’s arch enemy. After Jenny discovered her powers, she lost all interest in her former best friend and now his goal is to steal her powers from her. “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” is a great twist on the superhero fantasy. It takes a look at the life of a superhero from a completely different angle- less about G-Girl saving lives and more about Jenny trying to juggle a personal life with her secret. Despite the fact that I’m not a huge fan of Uma Thurman (I know, I know people love her, but something about her just bugs me!), she rocks as the scorned superhero. Needy and jealous, she plays a regular girl with superhero powers. Although the movie primarily focuses on Jenny’s more human aspects, the movie is not without some superhero action sequences. From G-Girl putting out the fire in a burning building to her revenge tactic of throwing a shark into Hannah’s bedroom window, flying and fast-changes aren’t out of this picture. Creative, interesting and laugh out loud funny, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” kept me entertained and had me talking about it with all of my friends afterwards. **** login to post comments |
