When the school bell rings on Aug. 7, Fayette County’s summer construction projects should be virtually complete.

That’s the word from construction manager Klaus Darnell, who updated the Fayette County School Board Monday night on his busy summer.

One of the small glitches in the summer work program has been the upgrade of the kitchen at Booth Middle School in Peachtree City. Darnell said kitchen equipment is arriving this week, and it will take a couple of weeks to install the tile and equipment.

“The school plans to serve sandwiches the first week, but after that things will be ready,” he said.

Other projects completed this summer included:

• A new addition at Rising Starr Middle School. Darnell said the brick exterior wall is complete on all the classroom wings and the floor tile has been installed. The fire marshal has given permission to move furniture and supplies into the classroom.

• An addition at Peeples Elementary School is virtually completed. The only major item left is the installation of the heat pumps. Darnell expects the units to be delivered this week and installation to occur immediately.

• The addition at Spring Hill Elementary is completed, with the exception of the new heat pumps. The units should be delivered next week, Darnell added.

Additionally, construction is well underway at the new Bennett’s Mill Middle School off Lester Road in the center of the county. All of the building’s steel roof framing has been installed, except for the gym area. Concrete masonry wall construction is ongoing in the classroom area.

“We should actually have this school finished ahead of time,” Darnell said.

The school will open in the fall of 2008.
