Burkett earns Eagle rankTue, 07/25/2006 - 2:01pm

Drew Burkett has earned the highest advancement award from the Boy Scouts of America- the Eagle Scout Award. On June 24, an Eagle Court of Honor was held at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. He is a member of BSA Troop 73, with Scoutmaster Steve McDowell, and the BSA national honor society, the Order of the Arrow. In achieving his Eagle Scout rank, Burkett earned 29 merit badges, held various leadership positions and completed a community service project by organizing and conducting a ‘Heart Screens for Teens’ event for local students. This screening detects potentially fatal heart conditions that cannot be identified during routine physical exams that manifest during in 11-18 year olds and can cause sudden cardiac death. Drew is a member of the Class of 2008 at Fayette County High School, and future plans include attending Georgia Tech to major in engineering and playing the bass professionally. At FCHS, he is a member of the varsity football team, track team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Beta Club and is an All-State string bassist in the Advanced Orchestra. For 2006, he is a Governor’s Honor Program finalist and alternate. Burkett is also a member of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and the church orchestra and has earned a black belt in karate. Drew Burkett is the son of Paul and April Burkett, brother of Chris Burkett of Fayetteville, grandson of Doris Burkett of Peachtree City, and Bobbie Kinser of Sylacauga, Alabama. login to post comments |
