The work of annexing one of Union city’s larger unincorporated islands came to an end July 18 as council members held 134 back-to-back public hearings to rezone and annex 67 parcels in Vickers Mill subdivision.

The meeting did not take as long as the number of hearings might indicate since there were no residents in attendance to speak for or against the annexations. Vickers Mill is situated along the east side of Ga. Highway 138. The area is surrounded on three sides by Union City and bordered by the City of Fairburn directly to the west across Hwy. 138.

Union City announced its intention to annex the area after Fulton County requested earlier this year that South Fulton cities annex any remaining unincorporated islands within their jurisdictions. Now that the subdivision is annexed, City Administrator Terrell Jacobs said the subdivision will began receiving police and fire services Aug. 1.

Several Vickers Mill residents attended the Planning Commission last month, asking that they not be annexed into the city. One of those residents recently attended a Fairburn Council meeting requesting that the subdivision be annexed into Fairburn rather than into Union City.

The council annexed 40 other parcels in the subdivision at an earlier meeting. With annexations in the subdivision now complete, Jacobs said approximately 90 of the city’s unincorporated islands have now been annexed.

A recommendation to annex the properties was made June 26 by Union City Planning Commission.
