Real Estate Stats and Stuff

Gary Marshall, broker at Assist 2 Sell Buyer & Seller Realty Center, is continuously researching information for his Real Estate on the Radio show, and his “Coweta-Fayette Real Estate Today Showcase of Homes” television show.
Marshall has collected some interesting real estate statistics and information over the last two or three months for his show, and is passing them onto you randomly in this article.

• There are approximately 3.6 million existing homes for sale in the United States. There are approximately 35 percent more homes for sale now than there were one year ago.

• There are 74.6 million primary owner occupied homes in the U.S. About 69 percent of us own our own homes. The market value of homes owned by U.S. households is $12 trillion.

• Americans paid out $11.3 billion in property taxes in 2005. Georgia residents paid $67 million in property taxes.

• Single women buy twice as many homes as single men. Last year over 20 percent of all home sales were to single women. Single men were involved in nine percent of all home sales.

• In the first quarter of 2006, alone, there were 323,102 foreclosures in the United States. Georgia had 24,419 foreclosures in the first quarter. Coweta County had 366 foreclosures while Fayette County had 32,726 foreclosures. The state of Georgia consistently leads the nation in foreclosures.

• In Georgia over half of all loans made in 2005 were adjustable rate mortgages.

• According to the National Association of Realtors, home sales are projected to drop 6.8 percent this year and new home sales are expected to fall 13.4 percent compared to last year. The national median existing home price for all housing types is forecast to rise 5.3 percent this year to $231,300. The housing market has cooled but 2006 is still expected to be the third strongest on record.

• Americans spent almost $215 billion on residential home remodeling in 2005 and that amount is expected to surge to $238 billion in 2006 according to the National Association of Home Builders.

• At any given time in Coweta County, there are approximately 1,500 homes for sale. There are approximately 500 realtors in the Newnan/ Coweta Board of Realtors. Does that mean that each agent gets to sell three houses each?

• There are 36,000 agents in the Georgia Multiple Listing Service. There are approximately 2.6 million real estate agents in the U.S. Nearly one out of every 300 Americans is a real estate agent. It’s even worse in California. There are nearly _ million real estate agents in California. One out of every 52 people in California is a real estate agent.

• Approximately 10 percent of the total job market in the U.S. is real estate related which include realtors, appraisers, loan officers, contractors, home improvement stores etc.

• The U.S. Census Bureau report out in April said Coweta County was the 68th fastest growing in the Nation.
