The Flat Rock AME Church on Chapel Road in Fayetteville was vandalized in August. A rock was thrown through a stained glass window, and its brick sign was kicked in, destroying the wording.

Jack Conard, 17, a senior at Starrs Mill High School, heard about the incident and decided to take it on as an Eagle Scout project. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 211, sponsored by the Peachtree City First Presbyterian Church.

He and his family are members at Peachtree City United Methodist Church, whose Mens Club provided most of the funds for the project.

Jack contacted Carl Feddern, an electrician, to install lights in the new sign, and Andys Nursery discounted the plants and flowers needed to landscape around the sign. He also enlisted the service of A Sign Group, Peachtree City, who will replace the lettering.

The church is the oldest African-American church in Fayette County, and was begun in 1854. It is located behind the new post office on Highway 54, halfway between Fayetteville and Peachtree City.

The Rev. Ed Johnson is the pastor and can be reached at 770-856-3271.
