"Godspell": STG tells Jesus' story through song and danceFri, 07/14/2006 - 10:16am
By: The Citizen
The scene is a sparsely populated park and soon a group will gather. This young, energetic group will tell a familiar tale, perhaps one of the most famous tales in all the world. It is the Gospel of St. Matthew, a story about Jesus and his teachings. While many may know the story, the way this is presented is unique, as it is told mostly through music. “Godspell,” conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the man behind “Wicked” and”Pippin,” has been a popular musical with audiences of all ages for a number of years. Some of the well-loved songs from the show include “Day By Day,” “All for the Best.” “Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord)”, and “By My Side.” The show will be presented by a cast mostly made up of teenagers at Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn. The cast includes Trevor Martin as Jesus and Andrew Puckett as Judas and John the Baptist. Other cast members who play assorted roles in the parables are Chase Leonard, Alex Couch, Andrew Leonard, Lauren Hayes, Kathryn Thatcher, Rachel Puleo, Lucia Roderique, Bridget Knapik, Ian McCarthy, Adrienne Harris, Alyssa Griffin, Anna Cook and Ashton McCranie. There will also be a live band performing the music during the show which features Jacob Pitts, Rick Fenwick and Albert Melear. The show is directed by Jared Wright, while Joel Kay and Dwain Eidson acted as musical directors and Sabine Scholz, Valerie Shellnut and Harris served as choreographers. The show opens this weekend and will run at 8 p.m., Thursdays-Saturdays through July 29. There will be one Sunday matinee, July 23, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 on Thursdays and $12 for students and $15 for adults at all other performances.
