NTC, Daddy's Dyin'

It’s an emotionally charged time as a dysfunctional Texas family gathers to be with their father after he suffers a series of strokes. Everyone in the family—a hairdresser, Bible thumper, trash collector and lascivious country singer—all have one thing on their mind as Daddy’s end draws near: where’s the will?

Newnan Theatre Company will present the comedy “Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?” by Del Shores July 14 through 30. Due to the popularity of this show, everyone is advised to call for reservations as soon as possible. Director Trey Stephens said, “If the audience has half as much fun watching the show as we have had rehearsing, it’ll be a resounding success.”

Stephens adds that he’s happy to be working with NTC again. Last summer, he directed the wildly successful production of “Noises Off.” His background includes a degree in theatre and drama from the University of Georgia and three years in Los Angeles working in the entertainment industry. Since then, he’s moved back home to Georgia, with its more relaxed lifestyle, and become a teacher.

“After rehearsing with the cast for a short time, I’ve been pleasantly surprised that everyone has really bonded and is just like you would expect a family should be—contrary to the relationships of the characters in the play,” Stephens said.

The cast includes: Terri Morrison as Sara Lee Turnover, Lisa Boyd as Lurlene Turnover, Dawn Campion as Mama Wheelis, Diana Sullivan as Evalita Turnover, Rob Duckwall as Harmony Rhodes, Jamie French as Orville Turnover, Kathleen Winters as Marlene Turnover, Bert Lyons as Buford Turnover and Dave Wood.

“Daddy’s Dyin’” opened with a Premiere Night on Thursday, July 13. Previously reserved for dress rehearsals, NTC’s Premiere Nights invite everyone in as the final polish goes on the show. For Premiere Nights, complimentary hot and cold hors d’oeuvres are provided and prices are slashed in half—from $12 to $6 for adults.

Tonight, however, is the official opening night and the special pricing—half price tickets and a 2-for-1 deal for season ticket holders—will be carried over to tonight’s show as well. “Daddy’s Dyin’” is an Artist Series show, and will be presented in NTC’s Black Box theater which has only 65 seats available each night.

“Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?” will be presented July 14-16, 21-23 and 28-30. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows start at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinee performances begin at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens; Newnan Theatre Company, located at 24 First Avenue in Newnan, is handicapped accessible. For reservations, season tickets and more info, call 770-683-6282, email nctc@numail.org or visit www.newnantheatre.com.
