The Georgia Department of Education has released the statewide list of schools which have successfully met Adequate Yearly Progress, including the status of Coweta County Schools, under the No Child Left Behind act.

22 of 25 Coweta County Schools met requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress overall and in all subgroups. Three schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) overall but did not make AYP in one or more subgroups

Under the national No Child Left Behind act, annual progress is determined by students overall test participation and performance on the Georgia Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT).

Arnall Middle School, Evans Middle School and East Coweta High School did not make AYP in one or more subgroups of students. A school is further identified as “Needs Improvement” if it has not made Adequate Yearly Progress in the same subject for two consecutive years. The three schools not meeting AYP are also listed in Needs Improvement status, and will offer transfer to schools making Adequate Yearly Progress on a space-available basis. Details of the school choice allowed under the status will be released in the coming days.

The information released this week by the state Department of Education showed that the AYP status of Coweta County schools had improved from 2005 to 2006.

All Coweta County elementary schools made AYP for the 2005-06 school year. The staff and students of Willis Road Elementary – which did not meet AYP in 2005 – were commended by school officials for exceptional gains in mathematics in the subgroups of Students With Disabilities. The subgroup’s performance on the CRCT math section rose from 37.5 percent meeting or exceeding standards in 2005 to 66.7 percent meeting or exceeding standards in 2006.

Three of Coweta’s five middle schools made AYP. Madras Middle school again met AYP, and Smokey Road and East Coweta Middle School improved their academic achievement scores from 2005 which allowed them to make AYP.

Evans and Arnall Middle Schools did not meet the state standards in mathematics in the subgroup of Students with Disabilities. The subgroup at Arnall met the standard for “Safe Harbor” for their scores in reading and language arts, which would have allowed them to make AYP in that area for 2006, but the subgroup did not meet the second indicator of attendance standards by 0.8% percent.

Newnan and Northgate High School both met AYP standards for 2006. East Coweta High School did not make AYP in mathematics and language arts in the subgroups of Students With Disabilities, Economically Disadvantaged and African Americans. The second indicator for all Georgia High schools is a graduation rate of 60% or higher. East Coweta’s overall graduation rate was 75.4 percent, but for one subgroup it was 44.1percent.

Overall CRCT scores and other indicators at the three schools not meeting AYP still met or exceeded the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. AYP, however, is determined by all subgroups within the school meeting the minimum testing requirements.

More information about schools in Needs Improvement status will be released by the Coweta County School System in the coming days.
