Words cannot express how much we appreciate Tyrone and Fayette County residents for helping with the improvements recently made to Shamrock Park in Tyrone.

We realize in order to revitalize the downtown business district along Senoia Road in Tyrone, the first project we must undertake is beautifying Shamrock Park.

Ball fields will be at Handley Park. Shamrock Park lights, fencing, and buildings will be torn down. Shamrock Park will be a passive family friendly park. Expanded kid’s playground equipment; improvements to the tennis court and basketball court should follow.

The new library, to be placed next to Roger Spencer Recreation Building, is scheduled to be finished in September 2008 and will compliment the lake.

Due to disagreements between the county and town regarding use of Shamrock Park, the town has for nine or more years neglected Shamrock Park. On May 20, we held our first clean-up day and over 100 county and town residents helped with the first phase of clean-up. On June 10 we held our second clean up day.

On July 4 we held our “Freedom isn’t Free — Thank a Vet” celebration. Veterans Dr. Bob Todd and Greg Dunn spoke and guest speaker Master Sergeant Pennington Walker of the 81st Regional Readiness Command spoke and had the honor of lighting the fountain.

Businesses, homeowner associations, and citizens purchased bows to pay for the fountain.

Special thanks to the Shamrock Park Restoration Committee and Judy Jefferson for heading up the project. Mark Shames of the United Community Bank gave us our first donation. Barry Amos, town manager, assisted with electrical. Buddy Hay provided new birdhouses.

Also special thanks to Tyrone Depot, Chip Young, Scott Holliwell, Burt Clark TCG Holdings, Abbey Lawn Care, Tyrone Neighborhood Alliance, Bennett’s Antiques, Box Car Cafe, Bud Shelton Signs, Century 21, Development Site Services, Dirt Brokers, Dollar Store, Joes Barber Shop, Tyrone First Christian Church, Kroger-Kedron Village, Publix-Tyrone, Red Door Consignment, Rotary Club of Tyrone, Salon Expo, Sons of Confederacy, Stallings Frame Shop, The Village Market, Tyrone Tire, and Walker Construction.

Thanks to the many, many, private donors, and many thanks to county commissioners Greg Dunn, Linda Wells, and Peter Pfeifer for helping with clean-up days, to the entire county commission board for recognizing that Tyrone residents need a passive park.

Once the park is improved, businesses will prosper, and the $18,000 recreation monies will be helpful, and for the cooperative meetings we had to discuss many Tyrone issues.
