Bob Todd 2003

Editor’s note: Candidate Bob Todd provided answers to two questions he omitted in his reply last week. The questions and answers are below.

5. Overall, is student discipline a problem in Fayette schools? Explain.

Orderly classrooms and schools are essential to student learning and safety. The Fayette County School System has had a long history of discipline in its schools. Developed policies are clear and consistent in spelling out procedures to be used in dealing with disciplinary problems. Enforcement of those policies and procedures depends upon the actions of building level administrators, support of certain system level administrators and the Board of Education. Periodic assessment of students’, parents’, and teachers’ perceptions of disciplinary problems should be used to determine if policies and procedures need review and change. In addition, a review of disciplinary cases will reveal the nature and extent of issues in this area which may need addressing.

6. How will Fayette schools be improved by your election?

The answer to this question is contained my previous essay and the one included today.

Essay

My personal commitment to Fayette County

The quality of Fayette County Schools is a major factor in the economic development of our community. As a Fayette County administrator, I was a key player in moving the system to first place in Georgia.

Now retired, I will bring to the board the perspective of a teacher, administrator, and university professor emphasizing quality teaching with a strong academic focus and will draw on my years of experience and knowledge to promote a quality instructional program.

I will be active in dealing with the challenge of growth. I will be a strong advocate for dealing with students illegally enrolled in Fayette schools. I will be a voice of reason, integrity, and experience on the School Board.

School Board members must meet the highest standards of personal integrity. These standards will be reflected in every action I take as a member of the board.

Board members are elected to serve the needs of students, not themselves, or vested interest groups. I have the courage to stand for what is right when the quality of education is threatened.

If necessary, I will stand alone on issues vital to system success. I will study all issues carefully and then vote for that which is appropriate. I will explain my reasons for the way I vote on issues.

During 34 years of successful experience in education as a teacher, administrator, and college professor I have dedicated my entire professional life to providing quality education for students. I will use my knowledge and experience when studying issues, examining differing points of view, and voting for that which best serves students.

As an assistant superintendent and director of secondary education, I am experienced in developing and implementing educational budgets. I will work diligently to secure funds to provide quality instruction for students. I will fight for funding to protect the integrity of instructional programs. I will not support the current practice of purchasing more land than is necessary for school sites.

The issues of maintaining resources in the classroom to provide quality instruction, providing facilities due to growth, selecting competent personnel, and evaluating programs and services all demand board members who are knowledgeable, skillful, and committed. I am experienced in the business of schooling and will work tirelessly in guiding the Fayette County System successfully through the next four years.
