No one was injured when a Fayetteville home was heavily damaged by fire this afternoon, according to city Fire Chief Alan Jones.

Nobody was home at 115 Cannon Court when the fire started, which “allowed it to get a head start on us,” Jones said. The fire had time to develop before a neighbor spotted the flames from the exterior and called 911, Jones said.

The fire has been determined to be accidental in nature, and it started in the kitchen area, Jones said.

Firefighters initially entered the home to attack it with water from the inside, but they soon had to evacuate because the roof had become unstable, Jones said.

The fire crews then used three lines to attack corners of the home, taking about 15 to 25 minutes to bring the fire under control so they could go back inside and knock down the hot spots, Jones said.

The first crew to arrive saw flames shooting through the home and a second wave of crews was summoned, Jones noted.

Fire crews from the City of Fayetteville and Fayette County responded to the fire with a total of five fire engines, two medic trucks, the county’s manpower squad and the city’s mobile command post, which is air conditioned for use if needed to provide a cooler environment for firefighters battling affects from the heat, Jones said.

After the hot spots were extinguished, fire investigators were to begin their investigation, Jones said.

The fire cut through the roof on several portions of the home, and much of the home’s contents were damaged, Jones noted.
