Mary L. “Mamie” Wells has been named director of the Child Development Center at National Heights Baptist Church, effective July 1. She succeeds the Rev. Dr. William F. Scarbrough, the church’s pastor, who also served as the center’s director. Scarbrough retired June 30.

A resident of Fayetteville, Wells recently retired from the Clayton County School System with 26 years of teaching experience. She has a B.A. in education and English from Judson College in Alabama.

During her tenure in the Clayton County system, Wells was a fifth and sixth grade teacher. While at Oliver Elementary School in Riverdale, she was instrumental in the organization of the After School Program and served as its director for six years.

“Mamie brings extraordinary gifts to the Child Development Center,” Scarbrough said. “We are truly blessed to welcome her visionary leadership and expertise to National Heights.”

The center has been in operation since 1988 and currently has an enrollment of more than 60 children, ages 1 through 5 years, in its toddler, preschool and Montessori classes. The Montessori program is one of only a handful operating in Fayette County.

“When our children from the center matriculate into regular school programs, most of them test one to two grades above grade level,” Scarbrough said. “We are looking to Mamie to continue to build upon and improve the center’s excellent performance record with its students.”

Wells has deep roots in Fayette County. Her husband, Dave, a Delta employee, also owns a local photography business. She has two daughters, Heather Cole and Stephanie Goodwin, and four grandchildren, all residents of Fayette.

National Heights Baptist church is at the corner of Old Norton Road and Ga. Hwy. 54 in Fayetteville.
