Peachtree City residents can help shape the city’s future growth by participating in a survey that will steer the city’s plan for the next 20 years.

The survey will be mailed to 1,000 randomly selected homes, and it is available for download at www.peachtree-city.org and in print at the city’s library, City Hall and The Gathering Place.

The results will be used to guide the city’s comprehensive plan, a document that will outline how the city will grow in coming years. Particularly, city officials anticipate that redevelopment will occur, especially in older retail areas and neighborhoods.

“Because Peachtree City is a ‘master planned’ community, some people have the impression the city will reach ‘build-out’ and things won’t change,” said City Planner David Rast. “Nothing could be further from the truth and the comprehensive plan will give the community a chance to guide that change over the next 20 years.”

There is still a significant amount of vacant commercial and industrial land to be developed, Rast added.

The printed surveys can be mailed or faxed back to City Hall or placed in designated boxes at City Hall, the library and The Gathering Place.

The survey, which will also glean information about how residents use the city’s multi-use path system, was developed by city staff and a volunteer board that has been overseeing the comprehensive plan process.

Other communities have used consultants for this process, but the volunteer group is helping shape the plan to be more oriented specifically to Peachtree City’s needs, Rast has said.

In addition to the survey, the city also has copies of its community assessment and community participation program available online at www.peachtree-city.org. To view them, click on the link at the bottom of the page to “Boards & Committees” and then click on the link for the “Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board.”

Volunteer board members are available to speak to local groups such as civic clubs so more residents can learn about the comprehensive planning process. Interested organizations should contact Rast at 770-487-5731 to arrange for a speaker at an upcoming meeting.
