Board of Education member Mike Sumner, along with two other incumbent board members, made it official this week as they qualified for re-election.
Sumner, who is elected at large from District 1, got an early start and announced at the June13 board meeting that he would seek a fourth term.

“There are just some things in progress that I like to follow through,’ he side.

Sumner pointed to the ongoing construction of the three ninth grade campuses next to the county’s high schools and also said a unique opportunity may present itself next to the county’s much-lauded Centre for the Performing Arts.

“There’s a possibility that Central Education Center could open a satellite campus next to the arts center and provide a arts magnet school for the county,’ he said.

Even though the school system has been getting a lot fewer dollars from the state, Sumner is proud the board has been able to work on reducing class size at the elementary level. Sumner is one of the board’s two at-large candidates and represents the entire county.

“This wasn’t an easy decision to make, since I know how much campaigning is required, but it’s worth it.”

Other members that qualified this week were Smith Pass in District 3 and Brian Roy in District 4. pass will face opposition from former board chairman Harry Mullins. The other seat open during this election cycle is District 1. Nobody, including incumbent Steve Bedrosian, had qualified by boon Thursday. Qualifying ends today at noon.
