Scout needs to unlearn propaganda

As commendable as Alex Przbyszewski’s Boy Scout service is, (letter to editor June 21) it is disturbing to note the success the (obviously) government schools have had in brainwashing him to believe that it is good when the constitution is trampled upon and government becomes more of a nanny state.

Recycling is second nature to me, to the irritation of all my friends. I recycle newspapers for our church, plastic bottles and magazines, grass clippings and vegetable scraps. Every pull tab from a soda pop can is saved and sent to Ronald McDonald house; the aluminum cans recycled and on and on, ad infinitum.

Every additional tax and “fine” that is placed on any activity is another loss of freedom. For a Boy Scout, of all people, to suggest that government intercede into the freedoms guaranteed by our constitution is appalling.

That fine organization has suffered in recent years because of political correctness and Big Brother interference.

I served four years as a den mother for cub scouts when my sons were young; ‘way back then I taught my 12 little “cubs” frugality. I also tried to teach them respect for the founding fathers and the freedom guaranteed for individual activity.

Those were the years when the government schools actually taught patriotism, love of country, and respect for individual freedom, so my job was simply to reinforce the belief that duty — to God, to country, to family and to our fellowman — was the responsibility of each one of us. That was before the “blame the United States for all the evils of the world” mentality ensued.

As part of his communications merit badge, may I suggest that Alex read the Federalist Papers and the Constitution of the United States. He could then write another letter.

If that is too difficult, at least read John Stossel’s latest book, “Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity.” A dedicated investigative reporter, Stossel states that “..the EPA says that ... overall landfill capacity is actually increasing. Dump operators keep finding new ways to pack the trash tighter, to make it decompose faster, and pile it higher ... all of America’s garbage for the next 500 years would fit into one landfill 100 yards high. And it wouldn’t even be the size of one of Ted Turner’s ranches.” (page 25)

Good luck on earning your merit badge, Alex. Along with it learn that every time government limits any freedom, we are that much closer to bondage.
