All 54 lanes to be open by July 31 in Fayette/Coweta

Traffic crunch starts Sunday night

A traffic crunch is expected several nights in a row on Ga. Highway 54 starting Sunday at 8 p.m. as crews work on paving between the CSX railroad bridge and Ga. Highway 74, officials said.

Motorists in the area between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday can expect delays and are asked to use caution by slowing down and watching for persons who will direct traffic with flags. Autos will also be guided by cones and barrels.

The really good news is that the Peachtree City work should be open by July 31, and the Coweta side is also likely to make that deadline, according to Barry Hancock with the Georgia Department of Transportation. Open in this case means that both lanes can be used in both directions, Hancock explained.

Hancock cautioned that could change depending on weather, material availability and other factors, and small matters might require short-term lane shifts to put the finishing touches on the project.

This week contractors have been working on final paving, striping and testing signal lights for reliability, Hancock noted. Even after the project is finished, the DOT will evaluate other facets of the road that can take time to size up, such as drainage.

“Finishing up just takes time,” Hancock said.
