Just when you thought it was safe to drive Ga. Highway 34 into Coweta County, another shopping center has been approved for the busy road.

The Coweta County Commission voted Tuesday night to rezone 54 acres at the intersection of Hwy.34 and Fischer Road from Rural Reserve to C-7, Commercial Major Shopping.

The conceptual site plan show more than a dozen buildings on the site and features more than 291,800 sq.ft. of commercial space. In its recommendation to approve the request, county officials recommended several transportation improvements conditional to the zoning, including:

• An eastbound left-turn lane and a westbound deceleration lane off Hwy.34 at the proposed parkway that would serve as the main entrance to the development.

• A southbound left turn lane and a northbound deceleration lane at the access point on Fischer Road.

• The construction of sidewalks along all internal roadways and along property frontage off Fischer Road and Hwy.34.

The rezoning passed 3-2, with Commissioners Greg Tarbutton and Tim Higgins voting against it.
