Mr. and Mrs. John Daniel Stephens of Peachtree city announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Loren Stephens of Key Biscayne, Fla., to Joe Edward “Matt” Mathews Jr. of Coral Gables, Fla., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Edward Mathews Sr. of Statesboro.

The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Robert Baumwell of Boynton Beach, Fla., and the late June Baumwell, and Daniel L. Stephens of Newnan, formerly of Millen, and the late Annie Laurie Stephens. She was graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in marine science and biology. She is an education program supervisor at the Miami Seaquarium and is pursuing her master’s degree.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Mrs. Frank T. Proctor Sr. of Statesboro and the late Mr. Proctor, and Mrs. Charlie Joe Mathews, also of Statesboro, and the late Mr. Mathews. He was graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in marine affairs and is employed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration while also pursuing his master’s degree.

The wedding is planned for Aug. 12, 2006.
