‘Biggest rummage sale in the county’ starts FridayTue, 06/20/2006 - 4:56pm

Fourteen years ago, a handful of parishioners of the Catholic Church of Saint Gabriel held a modest rummage sale in the back yard of a member, the late Marge English. This Friday and Saturday parishioners will again host the annual sale (this time at the church) which has now grown to be one of the largest events on the county’s “yard sale calendar,” drawing thousands of shoppers from around the area. The sale is set for Friday, June 23, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Saturday, June 24, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Parishioners have been collecting items for months and thousands of items will be available indoors and outdoors . The Knights of Columbus will offer food for sale and a bake sale will provide sweets for those with a sweet tooth. “This year will be by far the best and biggest ever,” said Donna Arganetto, president of the St. Gabriel’s women’s guild and chairperson for this year’s sale. “People will really be excited when they see the great items we have this year.” To pull off the sale, nearly 100 volunteers will work all week long, setting up and handling all facets of the event. “It’s a lot more work than most can imagine when you do something this big,” Arganetto continued, “but it is so much fun. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Last year the sale featured most items of clothing for $1. This year organizers are going one better — all the clothes one can stuff into a 10-gallon bag will cost just $5. The feature is expected to be a big hit with bargain hunters. Advance information on what items will be available will not be given out by phone. The church asks that shoppers not call the church requesting that information. St. Gabriel’s is just south of the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 92 and Antioch Road. login to post comments |
