New Hope UMC Memorial Day

As has been their tradition, members of New Hope United Methodist Church celebrated Family and Friends Day on Memorial Day, with a gathering of friends and family, salute to veterans, barbecue, singing, games and entertainment.

More than 850 people attended the outdoor event held under the church’s 100-year-old oak trees.

The day started with praise and worship with guest speaker Allison Henderson. A barbecue dinner, singing, games and fellowship followed.

Most prominent among church traditions celebrated during the day was the history and “plaiting” of the May pole, left over from May Pole Day of times past. The history, related by Jackie Welch and Hazel Grooms, told of children carrying colored ribbons, circling the pole and adorning it from top to bottom.

Much of the credit for the day’s success was given to Pastor Belinda McCastle, for moving the festivities outdoors.
